To My Daughters’ Father,

I’ve been reflecting on what has happened since you stepped out of our lives. The more I reflect, the more I return to these two simple words: thank you. I know that might sound strange, but I mean it. As painful and confusing as it was at the start, your absence created room for something profound to grow—something none of us could have anticipated.

Our fresh start began just four days after your wedding. During the girls’ weekly visit, your new wife, in the heat of an argument, suggested they take a break from seeing you. Stunned and hurt, the girls packed their bags and came home to me. Since that night, they haven’t been back.

They waited. They hoped. They held on to the idea that you’d return ready to be the father they deserved. But as the months passed and there was no sign of you,
